local video store, Butler Elementary. What stood out was the trip to the Carleton Health Department. That and this visit. The shingle said Dr. Mitchell Tojian, Pediatrician, yet their son wasn't with them. And the woman had come out crying.
The Saab headed up Hutchinson, past the school and over the hill to Jason. It turned up the long drive while Jack Perry continued to the turnaround at the end and parked behind the clutch of birches at the upper corner of the lawn. He didn't turn off the engine; he'd only be a minute. Just to sort out his thoughts.
It was a modest white colonial against thick woods. A low fieldstone wall ran the full width of the property enclosing a wide deep lawn that looked like a putting green. A bright yellow hose made a snake across the lawn. Along the front of the house were hemlocks, rhododendron, azaleas and stuff he didn't know the names of. A spreading dogwood sat in the middle of the lawn. Unlike the others in the neighborhood, it lacked bloom. A red brick walk led from the driveway to the front door, low antique lanterns discreetly lighting the way. A yellow plastic tree swing dangled from a side maple. High oaks and pines formed the backdrop.
A Norman Rockwell, he thought, plastered over dirty little secrets.
